‘Pataphysics and Magick an inapplicable pair?
A couple of years ago I stumbled upon a Book at one of my favourite german publishers, Matthes & Seitz. The Book is called ‘Pataphysik and I had NO Idea what that is supposed to be. To be totally hones, I am still not alltogether sure what exactly is in- or excluded to ‘Pataphysik. But I most definitely stumbled upon an astonishing number of interesting Art, Webpages, Jokes, Nonsens and as usual with things you never heard about before, interestring people you did here about before. Here are some directions for your own journey to ‘Pataphysik:
Wikipedia informs us:
‘Pataphysics (French: ‘pataphysique) is a philosophy or pseudophilosophy dedicated to studying what lies beyond the realm of metaphysics.” The term was coined and the concept created by French writer Alfred Jarry (1873–1907), who defined ‘pataphysics as “the science of imaginary solutions, which symbolically attributes the properties of objects, described by their virtuality, to their lineaments.”
Alfred Jarry, created a play called King Ubu (Ubu Roi). WTF, did you ever hear about that play? I did not, but others did. The great painter Miró made a whole Series about Ubu. Other Artists where also fascinated by Alfred Jarry (and probably ‘Pataphysik along with it). The most famouse example must be Pablo Picasso.
After you checked out Ubu, go find out about a Dr. Faustroll, a monkey and the surface of god.
Now lets go to more modern Fields and ask google about Umberto Eco, Jean Baudrillard and other “Transzendente Satrapen” around the Colege de pataphysique. I would also try to make a picture search around some ‘Pataphysik terms. There is a lot of Art and Literature evolving from there.
How do I see magick coming into this you might ask. Well If I somehow stumble into a whole new world of Art, Thought and culture that is magickal in itself for me. I try to compare this word often associated with the “positivism”
of Ernst Mach,
which is then the scientific way of thinking …
and suddenly –
there is an illogical situation and one human, can understand and explain it.
Often a joke situation –
is somewhat malleable – logical.
“Para or pseudo” –
Often it is, then – clearly for you –
FOR THEMSELVES explainable – keeps … oh yeah –
like magick ! Do you not think, like this ?
But you can also say…what has not fundamentally, can not exist – or ?
So every sign/word is existent….
